- Francesco Tommasi is Associate Professor with the Engineering Faculty of the University of Salento, where he teaches Operating Systems;
- He is with the "Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Innovazione" where his research activities are in the fields of Network Quality of Service, IP Mobility and Satellite Internetworking;
- He is responsible for the "Laboratorio per l'Internetworking e l'Interoperabilità tra i Sistemi" (LIIS);
- He is responsible for the connection to the GARR Network of the University of Salento;
- He is co-author of more than 45 scientific works;
- He is co-author of the first Internet Proposed Standard ever signed by an Italian University (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2961.txt).
- In 2003 he has taught for a semester "Advanced IP Networking" at the "Université de Technologie de Troyes" (France).
- He is and has been scientific responsible for several research projects in the field of Satellite Internetworking, Satellite Distance Learning and Networking among which are the following:
- Project "Completion and Enhancement of the Satellite Distance Learning Center of the University of Lecce" funded by the Ministry of Education and University within the "Programma Operativo Nazionale" 2000-2006 “Ricerca Scientifica, Sviluppo Tecnologico, Alta Formazione” (see http://www.campusdelsalento.it/) ;
- Project "LAND-LAB" (responsible for the ICT part) funded by the Ministry of Education and University within the "Programma Operativo Nazionale" 2000-2006 “Ricerca Scientifica, Sviluppo Tecnologico, Alta Formazione” (see http://landlab.unile.it);
- Project "Banca Dati Tossicologica del suolo e prodotti derivati" funded from the regional administration of Apulia within the scope of technical measure 7.3.1. of POP 1994-99 with two more extensions (the last of them is still currently in developement) (see http://bdt.unile.it);
- Project Technological Transfer Law 598/94, art. 11: “Implementation of a Satellite and Terrestrial Router Prototype incorporating extended functionalities thanks to satellite driven software update” funded from the regional administration of Apulia;
