Course description

The Master's Degree in Communication Engineering and Electronic Technologies, taught in English, aims to train engineers capable of covering technical and technical-organizational roles in the sectors of design, production, operation and maintenance of modern telecommunications, navigation and remote sensing systems as well as applications and services based on these systems.
To this end, the training explores the following enabling principles and technologies
- physical layer transmission techniques of modern transmission equipment (modulation formats, equalization techniques, multiple access, etc.); statistical processing of signals and images; principles of design and allocation of resources in modern telecommunication networks;
- CAD of antennas and electromagnetic (EM) circuits; EM compatibility; radiopropagation models and optimization of radio coverage;
- aspects of circuit electronics and devices of particular interest for the telecommunications sector; nanotechnologies for the manufacturing of electronic and photonic devices.
The training is completed with an overview of modern digital communication systems aimed at showing how principles and techniques are used in the creation of each system. Particular emphasis is placed on third and fourth generation cellular networks and navigation systems.

For interested students, there is a wide range of theses and internships to be carried out in companies that give the opportunity to come into contact with the world of work by studying the current hot topics.
The employment rate one year after graduation, for graduates of the "master's degree in Telecommunications Engineering" from the University of Salento, according to AlmaLaurea data (ISTAT definition), is 100% in 2010, 94.1% in 2011 and 100% in 2012.
For the purposes of access to the Master's Degree in Communication Engineering and Electronic Technologies, the following are required:

- possession of the curricular requirements including an adequate knowledge of the English language;
- possession of adequate individual preparation.

In particular, to possess the curricular requirements, knowledge equivalent to that required by the general educational objectives of the three-year Degree - Information Engineering Class (Class 9 of Ministerial Decree 509/1999 and Class 8 of Ministerial Decree 270/2004) is required and therefore, without exclusion, all of the following requirements:

- possession of a Degree, a three-year university diploma, a Specialist Degree or a Master's Degree, pursuant to Ministerial Decree 509/1999 or Ministerial Decree 270/2004, obtained from an Italian University or a five-year Degree (prior to Ministerial Decree 509/1999), obtained from an Italian University or qualifications equivalent;

- possession of at least 40 credits, or equivalent knowledge for students in possession of a foreign qualification, acquired in any university course (Bachelor's Degree, three-year University Diploma, Specialist Degree, Master's Degree, first and second level University Master's Degrees) in the scientific-disciplinary sectors indicated for the basic training activities in the disciplinary areas of the three-year Degrees pertaining to the Information Engineering Class;

- possession of at least 60 credits, or equivalent knowledge for students in possession of a foreign qualification, acquired in any university course (Bachelor's Degree, three-year University Diploma, Specialist Degree, Master's Degree, first and second level University Master's Degrees) in the scientific-disciplinary sectors indicated for the characterising training activities of the disciplinary areas of the three-year Degrees pertaining to the Information Engineering Class.

- passing an English language proficiency exam or English language certification equal to level B2, or higher, of the QCER. This requirement is not required for native-speaking students.

- be able to use the Italian language fluently, in written and oral form. This requirement is not required for native-speaking students. In cases where the assessment is not positive, the student must acquire 'Further linguistic knowledge' in the Italian language, for example through the courses offered by the School of Italian for Foreigners.

A special Commission will evaluate the personal preparation of students who satisfy the aforementioned curricular requirements, according to the methods described in the Course of Study's Teaching Regulations.

Profile

Telecommunications Engineer

Functions

The Master's Degree Graduate in Communication Engineering and Electronic Technologies carries out his/her professional activity in various fields, such as design, testing, production and operation, assistance to technical-commercial structures, in manufacturing or service companies in the ICT sector and in public administrations.

Skills

Knowledge of the theoretical-scientific aspects of mathematics and physics to interpret and describe engineering problems or those that require an interdisciplinary approach and to address the continuous evolution and innovation typical of the sector.

In-depth knowledge of the following theoretical-scientific aspects:
-physical level transmission techniques of modern transmission equipment (modulation formats, equalization techniques, multiple access, etc.); statistical signal processing; optimized resource allocation protocols and techniques;
-CAD of electromagnetic (EM) antennas and circuits; EM compatibility; radiopropagation models and optimization and enabling electromagnetic technologies;
-aspects of circuit electronics and devices of particular interest to the telecommunications sector; nanotechnologies for the manufacturing of electronic and photonic devices.

Fluent knowledge, in written and oral form, of the English language, in addition to Italian, with reference also to disciplinary lexicons.

Placement

Graduates will be able to find employment in companies that design, produce and operate telecommunications equipment, systems and infrastructures and in particular regarding:
-the acquisition and transport of information and its use in telematics applications;
-hardware, software and services for wireless communications;
-terrestrial or space telecommunications and remote sensing services (in particular aimed at environmental monitoring);
-control of air, land and naval traffic

Graduates will also be able to find employment in companies in the more strictly electronic field oriented towards telecommunications devices and systems:
- companies active in the field of sensors and technologies for monitoring environmental parameters, and in the field of electronics wearable and implantable communicating with remote devices;
- companies active in the field of IoT (internet of things);
- companies active in the production of devices and integrated circuits;
- companies active in the field of digital electronics for electronic devices and systems and for the control of machines and plants.

Similarly, graduates will be able to find employment in various companies in the IT sector involved in the management of networks and information structures, but also in companies involved in the production of applications in the field of multimedia and the management of images, videos and audio.
The final exam consists of the discussion of a paper that serves to demonstrate the possession of the skills required by the educational objectives assigned to the Degree Course.
The paper proposed for the final exam, characterized by originality, always refers to a significant experience that may concern:
- a project activity;
- an in-depth study of a basic or applied research topic;
- an experimental research activity, carried out in university laboratories or at external institutions.
